What is Remedial massage?

I use classical Swedish massage for conditions such as back pain. This can be effectively combined with Oriental approaches such as, acupressure, cupping and meridian therapy.

Acupressure is the stimulation of acupuncture points.

Cupping has an historical Western and Eastern use in wintertime bronchial complaints. Today it is used as a vacuum on larger muscles over acupuncture points, facilitating blood flow and tension release.

Meridians connect acupuncture points together, and can be stimulated by direct massage.

Remedial massage is a physical treatment using methodical rhythmical strokes or massage techniques to enhance relaxation. The rhythmical and repetitive massage strokes provide physical reassurance, and an avenue for deepening relaxation, promoting a general sense of well-being.

Relaxation promotes the function of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is anabolic, or concerned with rebuilding the body, stimulating digestion, immune and eliminative organs, allowing healing to occur.

The pressure of the strokes and the massage tecnique build to relieve the effects of stress and muscular tension. Swedish massage is thorough, its techniques link individual muscles and muscle groups. NICE guidelines include massage as a treatment option for those with low back pain.

Swedish massage has a traditional reputation for effective physical treatment of constipation, and some trials suggest that indeed it may well be proven to be so.

Remedial swedish massage is individual, pressure is tailored for comfort, and for effective relief of painful and tense areas. Massage can focus on known problem areas such as the neck and shoulders, and low back. A full body massage can also create an overall sense of relaxation and enhances mood.
